Two subways stops with nearly the same name, we seemed to gotten of at the
wrong stop. I think this is the stop we should have gotten off at.

A good hotel. The woman at the front desk knew some English and she used google translator to help resolve difficulties related to the language barrier. A pleasant little hotel with friendly staff. Taxi drivers (when they would bother to pick up a westerner at all) had some trouble finding the hotel even though we had the address written in Chinese. The hotel was also a long walk from the tube station so we had to catch a bus to take the tube. The bus was quite and experience as we caught it on the wrong side of the street and had trouble understanding that is what the conductor was trying to tell us. Bus she wrote us a note so we would not have to pay the fare again after we got off and crossed the street to catch the bus going in the right direction. But the conductor on the second bus was loud and demanding and forced us to pay twice. Since the fare was less than one dollar USD we did not bother arguing about it too much.

The room was comfortable enough during our three night stay.
Ice cream and drinks we for sale in the lobby of the Ao Xing Ge at prices that seemed very reasonable.

The personal feel that we got from the hotel staff help to make up for what seemed like a very strange and impersonal city to us. A resident in a near by building climbed up a ladder and grabbed a male blossom to fertilize this female squash blossom while we watch. It worked and the squash grew visibly during our stay.

There were several good restuarants nearby, including one just a few steps from the door.

Most of these (all but 5) were taken with a point and shoot camera and they were taken before I took my first photography course. I've had my big camera for less than a year. I bought my D90 ( big camera) when I wanted to document the destruction of St. Edwards Catholic Church. The college media loan was not flexible enough to let me have a good camera for the quarter and I could not predict exactly when the church was going to come down; I needed access to a good camera at all times for that project.

These pictures and more will be on electronic display on October 22, at the Shelton Pavilion as part of a fund raiser for the Statewide anti-incinerator movement. I will have to move away from all this beauty if the incinerators are built.

I'm really surprised that someone stole this out of my front yard last night. If they put it back together and try to ride it they might break their wrist on it too. Also my house was egged two nights ago. There was a "Demand the vote on ADAGE" sign on my bike, the thieves left that behind.

This wood was left to rot in the forest after logging operations. It was not burned in an open pile and it was not burned in an incinerator next to houses and ball parks. Wood is often left to rot, it is not always burned.

These are the pictures that I am going to print 14 X 11 inches and hang up for my final class project today. The class is "Documentary Photography" at The Evergreen State College. Today is the last day of class.

These pictures are the culmination of MANY hours of work. They are copyright 2010 Shawnie Whelan, all right reserved. Copyright info is in the meta data but blogger strips that data.

All of these are for sale as 11 x14 prints, the price is $40 each.

Even though class is over I will continue to take pictures of biomess related stuff and post them here. I am not objective about this, so don't expect objectivity from me. I will be forced to move if Simpson and Adage build biomass incinerators near my house.

----Artists Statement----

The citizens in Mason County have come together like never before. Our community is working to keep the Duke Areva conglomeration known as ADAGE out of our county. ADAGE wants to install a massive wood burning incinerator four miles from downtown Shelton. Our community members have fought against this in different ways. Some members go and speak at all of the port, public utility and commission meetings. Other members protest outside of the meetings. Community members have also set up two town hall meetings and a garage sale. I have been to all of these meetings and places while working to document this unprecedented event in the history of our county.

He appears on the cam, seems frozen by the flash. Note the flashlight in his hand. My night vision flash makes his eyes glow, I don't think he is wearing glasses.

You can see one of his eyes glowing behind the bush on the upper left, it seems that the flash frightened him, so he hid behind the bush.

Here he is again 3o minutes later. Is he coming or going in this picture?

My deer cam caught this prowler in my front yard on April 5th. It looks like he saw the infared flash go off and then he ran away and then came back 30 minutes later for another look. It also came back again during the day of the 7th to get yet another look.

These trail blazes marksa fragment of an abandoned and forgotten trail in an area that was extensively logged. This tiny patch of Old growth at 3,800 feet in elevation, was left behind because it is Hemlock and Simpson only wanted Douglas-fir.

Saint Edwards Catholic Church built in 1931 and designed by Paul Thiry, the "Father of Northwest Modernism" ,was destroyed in November of 2009.

The parish sold the lot to Mason County. Mason County stipulated in the sales contract that the parish had to tear the building down.

Mason County intends to use the property as a parking lot.

Paul Thiry went on to be the principal architect of the Seattle World's Fair, the Washington State Library in Olympia, the Frye Art Museum in Seattle as well as the preservation and planning of Washington D.C. and its Capitol Building.

Saint Edwards was heralded as one of his early works that he designed before he became famous.

A group who wanted to save the historical building got together and offered Mason County $350,000 for the land. In the end it was down to one commissioner who decided to say no.

Saint Edwards has been an important part of the local community for some people. People who were married and baptized in this building are sad to see it go.

Saint David's Church, built in 1948 sits on the same block but it is protected as an historical building and can not be torn down.

I was harassed by someone who claimed to be security while I was shooting these. He tried to give me grief for setting my camera on a street sign while doing these 20 second exposures. I shocked him by telling him off in no uncertain terms.

So here is the first picture posted to this blog using my new camera. I am taking daily to weekly pictures of the destruction of this church.

This was taken at about 4am on the night of the first killer frost of season.

Someone stole my bicycle yesterday. I was going to take it in the Mountains for the first time today. 14" Kona blast black frame, grip shifters, broken right pedal. Water bottle cage. Stolen from Shelton. I bought it on September 16th.

The thief went into my gate and onto my front porch to steal it.
